Cardomom:
Spice trade in Kerala dates back 7500 years. The Spice Coast of Malabar has found mention in ancient travelogues. And if chilli and pepper have been the hot favourites across time, the cardamom of Malabar is considered the best in the world. In fact, today only cardamom from Kerala is used for any medicinal purposes in the West.

Cardamom ( Elettaria cardamomum), apart from its medicinal qualities, has a pleasing flavour and aroma that makes it a chief condiment for tea, cool drinks, confectionaries and sweetmeats, vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. At 750-1000 m above sea level the wooded Western Ghats are the home of the cardamom. The hills of Idukki district, which is the main cultivator of the spice, are called Cardamom Hills.

India is the world's largest producer of cardamom and Kerala contributes the lion's share. Commonly used in the state (and in the country), cardamom is available at all provision stores, super markets and state owned emporia across the country. Though the standard price is around Rs. 500/kg to Rs. 600/kg it may vary depending on quality.

Pepper:
Recently one of our guests from Finland reported with great enthusiasm. ''Yesterday I fulfilled one of my greatest ambitions ....". He had visited a pepper plantation the previous day. Many of his friends too shared his excitement having seen the precious pepper in its natural habitat.

In Kerala pepper is cultivated in a mixed crop environment. In Wayanad, pepper is planted amongst coffee plantations, and cultivated on a large scale. Pepper is also a main item in most kitchen gardens of Kerala.

The spice-scented shores of Kerala have beckoned traders from time immemorial, and its allure continues to hold sway even today. The spices trade still dominates the commercial transactions of the State. India, the world's largest exporter of spices, realises three fourths of its total output from the rich plantations of Kerala.

Kerala's spice trade with Babylon and Egypt can be traced back to the 3rd millennium B.C. Cinnamon from Kerala was used in embalming the dead bodies of the Pharaohs and in the manufacture of perfumes and holy oils. King Solomon of Israel (1000 B.C) is recorded to have sent his ships to Kerala for spices. Cinnamon from Kerala first found its way to the Middle East through the Arabs.

Clove and Spices:
A common spice of Kerala, cloves are the dried floral buds of Eugenia caryophyllaeta. Keralites call it Grambu or Karayambu.

Clove is one of the key ingredient of 'garam masala' (spices in varying proportions roasted and powdered). Traditionally garam masala is prepared and preserved at home, but now masala in ready to use powder form is available under different brand names. Cloves are also used to flavour sweets.

Cloves are available in sealed packs, which can be preserved for years together, at any provision store in the state.

In addition to being a flavouring agent clove has medicinal value too. Clove oil is a balm for tooth ache - Even the crushed leaves of the clove tree give relief to tooth ache. Clove oil is also effective in the treatment of acidity and indigestion. Prices varies according to quality and seasons.

Natural Chips from Kerala:
Chips are a favourite snack with people of all ages, all over the world. Anyone would be familiar with Pringles potato chips, Bahl-Sen flavoured chips and a variety of French fries. And no one would deny the fact that once they begin to eat chips they can never stop.

In Kerala, our exotic cuisine offers a rare variety of natural chips - without artificial colours or added flavours. We make chips from unripe bananas, jack fruits, tapioca, potatoes etc. You can find chips makers all over the State. These crisp, salty, deep fried thin slices of vegetables are also made in the houses and the most common is the banana chips.

Prices vary according to that of the cooking oil, (usually coconut oils), bananas, jack fruits, tapioca, potatoes and so on.

Agriculture

AGRICULTURE

The economy of Idukki is predominantly agricultural, Cardamom, tea, tapioca, rice, pepper, rubber, coconut, sugarcane, coffee, arecanut, ginger, lemon grass and vegetables are the most important agricultural produces of the district.

Crop husbandry and animal husbandry are thus the main occupation of the people. Agriculturists and agricultural labourers constitute the bulk of the population. About ten per cent of the total population are estate labourers.

CARDAMOM: "Cardamom small" botanically known as "Elettaria Cardamom" is an export-oriented plantation crop, which is grown at an elevation of 600 to 1200 metres above m.s.l. under the shade of evergreen forests. It is cultivated in 56,376 hectares in Kerala of which 70 per cent is in the Idukki district. On an average Kerala contributes around 70 per cent of the national production of the 'Queen of Spices' in which also Idukki contributes the maximum share. Thanks to the persistent efforts of the Cardamom Board and the co-operation of cultivators and labourers the crop of cardamom has reached an all time high.

TEA: The tea bush is planted in 23,415 hectares. Most of the tea estates are located in Devikulam and Peerumedu taluks. The tea estates of Munnar are owned by large companies. But in Peerumedu and Vandanmedu areas there are small estates and small individual holdings. Kannan Devan in Devikulam taluk and Malayalam Plantations in Peerumedu taluk are the biggest tea estates in the district. The Kannan Devan Estate is now owned by the Tata Tea Company while the Malayalam Plantation is possessed by British nationals.

TAPIOCA: It is grown in 7246 hectares. The main problem of Tapioca growers is the difficulty in marketing their produce. The discovery that silkworm can grow on the leaves of tapioca and yield valuable silk yarn and the proposal to start a factory for manufacturing starch from tapioca may give a fillip to tapioca cultivation. At the same time rubber plantations are making considerable inroads into this sphere.

RICE: It is cultivated 3640 hectares. The rice fields of the district are basically double crop ones except in Vattavada and Kanthalloor.

COFFEE: It is grown in 9389 hectares. The cultivation of coffee provides an additional income to growers of other kinds of crops.

SANDAL WOOD: It grows on 1600 hectares of forest land and also on titled and untitled holdings of private individuals in the Marayoor region of Devikulam taluk. The sandal tree is declared as State property but extraction of sandal oil on commercial footing is yet to be started.

COCONUT: All the yielding coconut plantations are in Thodupuzha taluk and in Kokkayar and Peruvanthanam panchayats of Peerumedu taluk.

RUBBER: It is rewarding crop and it is extensively cultivated Peruvamthanam and Kokkayar Panchayats of Peerumedu taluk and Muttom, Arakulam Vannappuram, Kodikulam, Velliyamattom, Alakode and Karikode Panchayats of Thodupuzha taluk.

SUGARCANE: It is grown in Marayur and Kanthallur.

IRRIGATION
There are no major irrigation in the district. The Malankara Irrigation Dam meant to impound the tail-waters of the Idukki Project would irrigate the western portion of Thodupuzha taluk. Flora and Fauna

The flora and fauna in these forests are truly astounding

Fauna :
Home to vast herds of Elephants, bisons, bear, wild boars, sambar wild dogs, jungle cats, tiger, wild boar and has a very large concentration of various species of snakes including cobra, viper, kraits and numerous non-poisonous ones. The bird life in the sanctuary is equally impressive.

All kinds of wild animals with the exception of lions abound in the forests of Idukki. The grasslands of Peerumedu are a haven of carnivores like the tiger and the leopard. This is chiefly so, as they are a natural upon. Bison, wild bear, languor and monkeys are a few other common denizens of the jungle. The Thar (striped goat) seen in Marayur region and Rajamala is found nowhere else in the world. The forest glades of Idukki resound in day time with the sweet voices of birds. They include the small wild parrots, mynas, red horned sparrows and a host of other nondescript species.

The valuable trees growing in the forests are teak, rosewood, deodars, sandal etc. The Forest Department has reared large Eucalyptus Plantations in the hilly tracts.
